Remove a stuck ring | How to:

In 25 years I have never had to remove a stubborn ring but if I did, I'd try this.

Here's some handy advice and tricks to know about!

To remove a stuck ring, first, reduce finger swelling by elevating your hand and applying iceThen, try lubricating the ring and finger with soap, oil, or window cleaner and twisting gently. If that doesn't work, use the dental floss or ribbon method: slide a string under the ring, wrap the finger tightly past the knuckle, and then unwind the string to pull the ring off.

1. Reduce Swelling
  • Elevate your hand: Hold your hand above your heart for 5-10 minutes to decrease blood flow and reduce swelling.
  • Apply cold: Place ice or a cold pack on the finger to further counteract swelling.

2. Lubricate the Ring

Use household items:
Apply a lubricant like window cleaner, soap, cooking oil, or butter to the ring and the finger.
  • Twist and pull:

Gently twist the ring back and forth while pulling it toward your fingertip to slide it off.

3. Use the Dental Floss Method
  • Thread the floss:

Carefully slide one end of a piece of dental floss or thin ribbon under the ring, with one tail pointing toward your hand.

  • Wrap your finger:

Tightly but comfortably wrap the other tail of the floss around your finger, starting from the ring and spiraling up past your knuckle.

  • Unwind the floss:

Take the short tail of the floss (the one under the ring) and slowly pull it, unwinding the string from your finger. The ring should move along with the unwinding floss and slide off.

When to Seek Urgent Care
  • If the ring cannot be removed after trying these methods, or if the finger is discolored or shows signs of circulation issues, seek urgent medical care to prevent further damage.

Hopefully you'll order your correct ring size here - if not, don't worry, I can usually resize it.
